Stephanie Lane Gage, 2022
Phantasmatopia collects research that contrasts two examples of possible utopias. One is an imagined, far-future utopia called Mattapoisett from Marge Piercy’s 1970s feminist science fiction novel, Woman on the Edge of Time. The other is a short-lived, real-world attempt at utopia called Llano del Rio, a community started by a failed socialist LA mayoral candidate in the early 1900s located in the Southern California desert. The zine contains quotes, photos of the Llano del Rio ruins, altered AI visualizations of Mattapoisett, Gage’s written reflections on the research, and two fonts designed specifically for this project. The binding of the zine makes it cyclical, without a certain start or end. The two zines create “halves” connected by a long cover with a die-cut hole in the center, revealing the other utopia via a portal through time.
